Summer Energy-Saving Tips for Residents

Summer is here, and staying cool is essential. But no one likes spending too much on energy bills! That’s why we have the perfect summer energy-saving tips to help residents remain comfortable this summer

1. Air Dry Your Clothing

Air drying your clothing instead of using the dryer can help reduce energy! Drying your clothing on a drying rack can also help reduce the cost of your heating bill at the end of the month since you aren’t using your dryer. Simply doing three loads of laundry a week in cold water can help save $22 a year!

Tip: Use a drying rack on your balcony or deck to air dry your clothes faster!

2. Use Your Window Shades

Use Your Window Shades

Window shades aren’t just for privacy or decoration—they can also help you save energy! Opening and closing your shades when it’s hot or cold inside your home can be the first step to cooling off or warming up. Using the outside weather to your advantage can help combat the high heating costs in your home when you use your thermostat.

Tip: Open shades to let in the sun and warm your space, or close them to keep cool on hot days.

3. Unplug Devices

Unplugging devices can be a task—we all have many devices plugged in daily but think about how much energy is wasted each month by leaving them plugged in 24/7. Just like you may need a break, let’s also give a break to those plugs. After all, looking at that energy bill, I think it will be worth it at the end of the month.

Tip: Unplug electronic devices when not in use to prevent energy drain.

4. Adjust Your Thermostat

Set your thermostat closer to the outdoor temperature when you’re away to save on cooling costs. This simple adjustment can make a significant difference in your energy bill.

Tip: Use a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust temperatures when you’re not home.

5. Shower Efficiently

Taking shorter showers can be challenging, but in the summer months, aim for cold water when taking a shower. Not only will it cool you off, but it will also save you money when your heating bill comes in. Keeping your showers under 5 minutes can also significantly affect water costs at the end of the month. According to Regina Home Builders, water heating typically accounts for 18% of your utility bill. For example, if your monthly energy bill is $100, that’s $18 for heating water.

According to the Government of Saskatchewan, “Reducing your shower time by two minutes can save 2,600 litres of water per month” (June 2023). That’s a huge amount! Taking this small step is a great way to start lowering your water bill and making a positive impact.

Tip: Consider lowering your water heater temperature.
Tip: Turn off the faucet while brushing teeth or shaving; only use water when you need to rinse.
Tip: Turn off the shower when you are shampooing.

6. Cook Smart

Using a microwave or toaster oven instead of heating up the entire oven for smaller meals can save energy. You can also try grilling outside to keep the heat out of the kitchen. Doing this can make a difference in your heating and energy bill at the end of the month.

Tip: Plan your meals to minimize oven use and keep your kitchen cooler.
